DEVONPORT ORPHANS’ CLUB
“OLD HANDS” NIGHT Once each year the Devonport Orphans’ Club extends its hospitality to the “old hands ’ of the suburb, and the occasion is presided over by the Hon. E. W. Alison, himself one of the few residents of the North Shore who can boast of having lived at Devonport since the early fifties. The club mourned the death of a life member, Mr. A. J. Tapper. Among the guests was the Rev. D. McPherson, a veteran social worker, who is approaching the century mark. Mr. Osborne Lilly .endered the Savage Club’s thanks for an invitation to be present. The concert programme was supplied by the club band (under Con ductor W. D’Authreau) and Messrs Kevin, Allan, Rainger, O’Malley, Brur.p and Lucas. Rowley Hill, a well-known veteran soldier, failed to attend the function, this being the first time he has had to tender an excuse since the function was inaugurated four years ago. Mr. Hill had to plead infirmity, but sent along a photo of himself, displaying his war medals. The chairman, Mr. E. W Alison, invited the Mayor of Devonport, Mr. E. Aldridge, to accept the photo on behalf of the borough.
