SIXPENCE A MILE?
WAR BETWEEN TAXI GROUPS PRICE-CUTTING STARTS According to the assertions being made by the various taxi companies, those members of the general public who use taxis should be noticing an appreciable difference in their meter readings. The taxi-using public should, in fact, be reaping the benefits of the price-cutting war which is now in fairly full swing in Auckland. The possibilities are that, from the public point of view, things will be decidedly better. It is even rumoured that taxi fares may come down to sixpence a mile. Possibly people who use tlieir own motor-cars will feel inclined to give them a spell. Everything considered, few people can run their cars at that price. PUBLIC SPENDING RESTRICTED No one could suggest that Auckland suffers from any shortage of taxis, and recent large additions have played their part in affecting the position. Taxi businesses, like other businesses, thrive better on large turnovers, so that two things are causing the present price-cutting. One is competition, and the other an endeavour to encourage the use of taxis. As one company representative put it: “We’re not here for a joke, and we’re better merely paying our way than standing still.”
