DIG IN RIBS BREAKS TRANCE, BUT SPOILS ENDURANCE RECORD

ANE of those idiotic endurance tests which are ever and anon inflicted on the sporting world, had a diverting ending at Lismore (N.S.W.), a week or two ago. Tom Greenhill set out to break an alleged ball-punching record of 72 hours 10 minutes. He had managed to last it out for just two days (46 hours to be exact) _ when his behaviour became rather strange. He appeared to be in a trance, as though the continuous motion of the ball had exercised some hypnotic effect on him. His trainer attempted to wake him up with a dig in the ribs. Greenhill recovered suddenly, and ’tis said, swung at the unfortunate mentor, almost knocking him out. Immediately Greenhill realised what had happened, and rushed to the water tap to revive his groggy comrade. In the meantime, the ball had stopped, and he had to admit defeat.
