MATU DISPLAYS FENCING ABILITY

PENEUS WINS BIG HURDLES KAITI COMPLETES HAT TRICK (Special, to THE *SUXJ Press Association. HASTINGS, Saturday. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting wa<s concluded to-day in fine weather, and in the presence of a large attendance. The course was in fair order. To-day the totalisator handled £15,076, compared with £13,802, the figures for the two days showing an increase of £437. Notes on the racing, and full details of results, are appended: At Short Odds Red Bank was a good favourite for the Havelock Hurdles, with Our Jack and Merle, who was making her first appearance over hurdles, fairly well backed. Red Bank soon took charge from Our Jack, and led through the straight with several lengths’ advantage, Merle lying third and Closefire tailed off. Our Jack ran up to Red Bank along the back, but Red Bank gained at the obstacles and drew away again. Our Jack closed up then at the entrance to the straight, but Red Bank gained again at the last fence and, finishing strongly, won by five lengths from Our Jack, who was three lengths ahead of Dapper Boy. who was ridden out and only just beat Merle. Peneus’s Great Finish Pencus was better backed than Gaze and Troilus for the Turamoe Hurdles. He was early in front and led past the stands from Puwhero, Troilus, Gaze and Braeman. Gaze was moving up along the back when he lost ground at the hurdles there and went back. Peneus led Troilus into the straight and Gaze came fast round the field. A great finish ensued from the last fence home, Peneus winning by half a length from Troilus, with Gaze another half-length back and Puwhero fourth. Locarno Again Dishonoured, Locarno and Rory Mor were the favourites for the Kidnappers’ Flat. Taku Tama led from Dishonoured, Royal Lineage, Plimmerton and Locarno, and entering the straight the order was Taku Tama, Royal Lineage, Dishonoured, Plimmerton, Locarno and Argue. Royal Lineage compounded, and Taku Tama met trouble. Locarno finished strongly and won nicely by a length from Dishonoured, with Royal Lineage a close third. Taku Tama was fourth, then Kalos and Rory Mor. Matu’s Easy Win Matu was backed as a good thing for the June Steeplechase owing to the withdrawal of Rangi Sarto, who injured himself when he got loose from his box the previous night. Prince Carol ran off at the first fence and Awangawanga took charge, leading from Matu, Royal Heather and Master Arch. The last named nearly fell at the first fence. Awangawanga led all through the first round and was still in charge, with a break of six lengths on Matu, when the last lap was begun. Five furlongs from home Matu outjumped Awangawanga. and from then on quickly overhauled him. He was in charge before the sod wall was crossed and fencing safely ran home an easy winner by eight lengths from Royal Heather, who easily beat the tired Awangawanga by a length. Master Arch fell at the sod wall in the final round and Prince Carol could not be pulled up and was still bolting when the race was over. Won as he Liked The whole of the nine acceptors went to the post for the Greenhill Handicap, and after a totalisator duel Addlepate finished up a slightly better favourite than Huikai, with Boy and Wanderlust also well supported. Epistle made the early running from Pita, with Addlepate and Huikai next, the others being bunched. Epistle led across the top and into the straight from Pita and Othon, with Addlepate and Huikai together next, and Wanderlust just behind them. Huikai took charge in the straight, and won as he liked by three lengths. There was a good finish for second place, Addlepate beating Epistle by a head, with Wanderlust only another head away fourth. Outsider Scores Well There was a. big surprise in the Raukawa Handicap, for which King Mart was favburite. High Heather, Grand National, King Mart, and Singleton were prominent early, with No Favours well back. Grand National led High Heather, Pale Star, and King Mart into the straight, but Clavers finished best, and beat Pale Star by a length, with King Mart a length away third. Grand National and High Heather were next. Green Just Heads Reed Kaiti and Fee Simple led to the straight in the Final Handicap, and there Kaiti drew away, to win by a length and a-half from Dreamy, who beat Royal Time by half a length, with Fee Simple close up fourth, and Othon next.
