PUZZLED GARDENERS

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS X.Y.Z., Kingsland. —Boronias should be easily grown on your soil, but do not require any manure while growing. Dig the ground over well, loosening the sub-soil and set the plants firmly. In cultivation do not hoe the soil round the plant too deeply as the roots are mainly surface feeding and on no account apply artificial manures. Poppies, Onehunga.— (1) So long as the cow manure was well rotted there will be no had effects. It is very early yet and the weather is too cold for heavy flowering. If you have patience I think you will find they will all bud up at once early in July. (2) They will not grow again next season. (3i If the early peas were set in the right position to get the maximum amount of sun they wall succeed. Hoe between the rows well. (4) Remove the runners from the violets while the flowering period is on, as they cannot flower and make new plants at the same period.

Mrs. E., Green Lane.—The sample of leaf submitted is badly affected by a type of eel-worm which enters and crawls up the interior of the leaf leaving its trail behind as shown by the scars on the leaf. There is no very effective cure as the insect is inside the leaf and spraying does not get at it. I suggest pulling off the most affected and spraying the balance with a strong mixture of bluestone and lime to remove the signs of blight on the back of leaves.
