UNDER DIFFERENT LAWS?
PAKEHA AND MAORI PENSIONS DIFFICULTY “There is one law for the pakehas, and another for the Maoris.” This was the tenor of members’ remarks at last evening’s meeting of Te Akarana Maori Association, W’hen a letter was received from the Commissioner of Taxes in regard to old-age l»ensions for Maoris. The commissioner forwarded departmental regulations, and quoted the governing Act, which made it conclusive that the question of granting a pension to a Maori rested absolutely with a magistrate, and that there was no appeal from his decision. Members expressed great dissatisfaction with this reply, and suggested that some means should be availed of to remove the anomaly in the law, which differentiated between Europeans and Maoris. The subject will be placed l»efore the Maori members of Parliament.
