“REPROACH TO THE COMMUNITY”
SOLDIERS OUT OF WORK PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION MEETS “Unemployment of returned soldiers —a most regrettable feature—was, I think, more acute last year than in the previous year. This seems to me to be a reflection on the community. “No matter what it costs, the Government should provide relief work for these men.” These expressions were voiced yesterday at the annual meeting of the Auckland Patriotic Association, by Mr. V. J. Larner, chairman, who after extending a welcome to the delegates and commending their sustained interest, in spite of the fact that the war was now ten years a memory, proceeded to traverse various phases of the association’s activities. He referred particularly to returned soldier sufferers from tuberculosis. It was time a comprehensive scheme was put in hand. “Our staff is kept fully occupied and at times has more work than it can get through in business hours,” said the chairman, after touching on pensions questions and general administrative affairs. “Our investments,” he went on, “are fortunately beyond reproach, being gilt-edged and liquid.” There was a good attendance of members and delegates at the meeting. The report and balance sheet j were adopted. The following retiring members of the executive were re-elected: Lady Gunson, Messrs. J. F. Ewen, C. Rhodes, V. J. Larner, A. G. Lunn, W. Spragg, A. J. Entrican.
