ADVISED TO GET WORK

END OF INVOLVED CASE GAOLED AND FREED WITHIN WEEK. “You go away, and get some work,” was the advice of Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to Guy Carney, aged 23, as he left the Police Court today a free man. Carney, who appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing clothing valued at £9 10s, was saved from nine months’ imprisonment last week by the evidence of a stranger in the court. Suggestions were then made against the complainant in the case, it being alleged that Carney had cause to resent overtures made by him. Carney was then remanded until today to enable further inquiries to be made. Chief-Detective Hammond said today that little progress had been made. He was not sure that Carney was justified in making the charge of indecency. ‘He probably thought he ‘had the wood’ on complainant,” said Air. Hammond, “and took the clothes believing that complainant would not care to say anything.” A police witness said he had known Fulford, the complainant, for many years, and there had been no suggestions made against him before. Air. Hammond: He runs a motorcar? ’ Yes,” replied witness. The Magistrate: How can he do that when he is out of work? Continuing, the magistrate said that the truth probably lay between the two stories. Carney probably saw the kind of man he was dealing with, and decided to take what he could. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence any time within six months.
