RACING
NOTES AND COMMENTS GOSSIP FROM THE TRACKS BIG GUARD FOR RACECOURSE Te Kuiti A cceptances These are due to close with Mr. W. S. Spence at five o’clock this afternoon. For Next Week The racing at Hastings to-day and to-morrow will be followed next week by the Te Kuiti meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday, June 30 and July 2, and by the Ashburton fixture on June 30. The Trip is Now Off A couple of weeks ago it was intimated to the writer that the Trentham trainer, A. Goodman, contemplated a trip across the Tasman with three horses, but it is now understood that the voyage has been cancelled. Three-year-old Hurdler Glendowie's stable companion, Billy Boy, created a favourable impression when he was schooled over several hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning. and he is evidently going to make good in this department of the game. Billy Boy is a three-year-old gelding by the defunct Archiestown from Lady Lila, and a perusal of the stud book revealers that he is a half-brother to that one-time good lepper, Lady Comet, and also to the well-performed handicap mare Whetunui. One need not go further back to see that Billy Boy has the credentials to make a successful jumper, and perhaps trainer A. Rhodes will not have to wait long before receiving his due reward. Billy Boy is engaged in the Hunters’ Hurdles on the occasion of the Te Kuiti Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie next week, and is to be ridden by S. Henderson. Off To Australia. The Auckland ligMw«»i<»-n+ w If. Jones, is due t sail by the Maram to-day for Sydney Jones intends t follow his occupa tion on the othe side, and it is prob able that he wil make his permanen residence there. Foxhound Over Sticks A nominee for the Pio Pio Hurdles, an event on Te Kuiti’s programme, is Foxhound, and his ability in this direction is quite satisfactory—that is if his schooling at Ellerslie is any criterion. Foxhound showed a lot of speed in the Carbine Plate at Auckland’s recent winter meeting, and consequently he has attracted not a little notice since then. Foxhound was got by Swift Flight from Foxglove, and is a rising five-year-old, so there is yet plenty of time for him to show .his capabilities over the obstacles. Thursby for Easy Tracks No doubt Tliursby’s improved condition is due in a measure to the racing he was indulged in at Ellerslie recently. R. E. Brown has kept him swinging along since that, with the intention of having him at his best for Te Kuiti, and the manner in which he is getting through his work should not be at all displeas- ! ing to his trainer. If the present climatic conditions continue, Thursby will possibly be one of the early fancies for the Te Kuiti Handicap, for there is no gainsaying the fact that the Thurnham gelding is smart on a yielding track. Good Winter Sprinter Kingfield has been a model of consistency since Avondale in April, and consequently he is now set to lump big weights during the winter period. Kingfield’s next engagement will probably be the Stewards’ Handicap at Ellerslie next week, and in that event he is weighted at 10.13, thus having to concede liberal allowances to several useful sprinters. Possibly Kingfield will receive good support in this race. Glendowie Shows Pace Trainer A. Rhodes made his periodical visit to Ellerslie yesterday morning with Glendowie and Billy Boy. The former traversed a round on No. 3 grass track in company with Rahepoto, and went extraordinarily well, showing that he is at the height of his form. Glendowie is engaged in the Te Kumi Handicap at Ellerslie next week, and in such a class he has more than a reasonable chance to succeed —in fact, it would not be surprising to see him wind up the actual favourite. He is possessed with more pace than the average ’chaser, and good judges predict that if trained for it, Glendowie would win a good fiat race. Related to Cohesion J. Lambess is not unduly hurrying the two-year-old Hannibal, but nevertheless the youngster is progressing satisfactorily, and should be in great fettle when required to race. He was allowed to run along over half a mile , at Ellerslie yesterday, and shaped rather well. Hannibal is by Catmint from Nordica, hence a half-brother to that good but unlucky horse Cohesion. Better Over Obstacles A moderate to date. Odin is entitled to consideration in the Hunters’ Hurdles at Ellerslie next week, for lie was going rather well, and looked like having a chance when he fell in the second round of the Hunt Club Cup at Ellerslie’s recent winter fixture. On that showing alone, he will command respect, but in addition. no fault could be found with the manner in which he negotiated several of the schooling hurdles at headquarters yesterday. Likely ’Chasers One of the regular attendants at headquarters is the hack ’chaser. Importer, who is due to meet an engagement in the Otorohanga Steeplechase at Ellerslie next week. There has been nothing above the ordinary in his track doings of late, but nevertheless he looks in fine trim, the racing at Ellerslie recently having obviously worked an improvement in him. Importer was regarded as rather unlucky not to have scored a win at the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting, and on that account it is quite possible that he will come into his own at Te Kuiti. Still, he is due to meet several promising sorts, and among those who may be expected to participate in the finish are Royal Form, Mangari, Rahepoto. and Star of the East. Special Bargain. Friday Night Only. Men's Black Cashmere ali-wool Hose. Is lid pair.—At Fowlds.
