ROUGHS UNDER CONTROL
ALL ENGLAND THRILLED FLEET STREET AGOG (Australian P.A.—United Service) Reed. 12.15 p.m. LONDON, Thurs. Mr. Larkin, London manager of the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line, received a message direct from the captain of the Jervis Bay, that everything was going well and that the stowaways were under safe control. The ship was expectel to arrive at Colombo on the due date, Monday. The Jervis Bay drama is thrilling England. Every scrap of information is eagerly seized. The morning Press, unable to establish proof, presented the details sparingly. Following a night-long silence, the dramatic second message (cabled earlier) set Fleet Street agog. The evening Press rushed out editions with each new message / from Colombo, all published in the blackest type used since the war specials. The Australian Press Association office was Inundated with inquirers, while the headquarters of the line end Australia House were answering anxious inquiries from those who had friends and relatives aboard, all day long. Everybody was talking of this extraordinary drama of the sea, which is believed nowadays to be confined to the page of fiction. The fact that the Jervis Bay had not communicated with either headquarters officially caused bewilderment. Mr. Larkin, however, ventures one prediction, namely, that the ringleaders are not Australians. He adds that if there is any loss of life the leaders should certainly be hanged.
