MORE RAIL COMFORT
ATTENDANTS FOR TRAINS NEW RESERVATION RULES Two innovations are to be brought into operation shortly by the Railway Department. Train attendants are to be engaged to see to the comfort of passengers and the old regulation regarding the reservation of seats is to be altered. Evidently the new general manager. Mr. H. H. Sterling, has already started his campaign to make the railways more popular and more comfortable. Train attendants are to be placed on several of the principal trains of the North Island, starting on June 25. Their duties will be many and will add greatly to the comfort of travellers over long journeys. The trains on which the new attendants are to be employed are: The Napier-Wellington express. The New Plymouth-Wellington express, between Hawera and Wellington. The Auckland-Rotorua express. The Main Trunk expresses between Marton and Thorndon. There are already sleeping-car attendants on these trains between Auckland and Marton. Short Distance Reserves From July 1, passengers will be allowed to reserve their seats on the trains between Auckland and Frankton Junction and Palmerston North and Wellington. This is another innovation by the j department tended to popularise the i railways. Previously passengers were not \ allowed to reserve their seats unless i they were travelling 100 miles or over. ! The only stipulation made is that passengers who desire to reserve their seats under the new regulation should do so two days in advance of the day of travelling. Reservations under 100 miles will not be allowed on the Auckland-Wellington expresses as these trains are primarily for the use of travellers over long distances. Reservations under 100 miles are also to be allowed on the South Island lines between Temuka and Christchurch, and Ashburton and ChristchurchThe new system will be given a three months’ trial.
