DOMINION EXECUTIVE MEETS
MINOR UNIONS’ QUESTIONS Pre*s Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union Management Committee last evening the following applicants were granted reinstatement: A. W. Porter (Hamilton), H. Hudson (Auckland), J. L. Grogan (Westport). L. L. Doherty (Granity), P. A. Pascoe (Greymouth), H. G. Shalll'oon and L. D. Stewart (Opotiki), J. Bishop and R. G. Dibble (Taupiri), E. Prince (Hamilton), C. Paul and J. V. Adams (Ngaruawahia), L. O’Halloran and H. P. J. AlcCormack (Frankton). O. G. Davis (Alataura), W. Begley (Wellington), A. B. Rowlands (Timaru), W. F. Doherty (Onehunga). The Southland Union wrote asking whether sub-unions affiliated to the larger unions were eligible lor selection in the North and South Minor Unions’ match. It was decided to reply that the classification agreed upon at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union would be adhered to. This means that sub-unions attached to major unions would play with major unions and sub-unions attached to minor unions would play with minor unions. Mr. S. S. Dean asked if players who took part in the North and South Minor Union match would be eligible for selection in the North Island v South Island match. Mr. T. A. Fletcher; Certainly. Mr. Dean; Yes, I take this view. The object of playing the Minor j Unions Inter-Island match was to give players in the minor unions a chance of showing their worth. PRINCE OF WALES CUP The Poverty Bay Union forwarded a letter from the Young Maori Party Club, of Gisborne, requesting permission to challenge for the Prince of Wales Cup as a club. Mr. E. Wylie said that it wajs not in the interests of the game that Maori clubs should be allowed to compete for the cup. Such a course would lead to the disruption of representative teams. The Maoris should work in with the New Zealand Rugby Union. The Canterbury Union wrote sug.gesting July 14 as a suitable date for their match with South Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield. The match against Wairarapa for the shield had been arranged for July 18 at Christchurch. In an informal discusion about a letter from the Bush Union, drawing attention to the little financial help received from the New Zealand Rugby Union, Mr. C. Otto, of the King Country Union, who was present by courtesy, put in a word for more financial help for the smaller unions. “You have plenty of money/’ he said, "and you cannot take it you.” Mr. E. Wylie; We have very little money. We have not even enough to build a grandstand at Athletic Park in order lo get more revenue. Mr. Otto: X am afraid that you fellows must be all Scotch. Mr. S. S. Dean said that the New Zealand Union would like to help the smaller unions, but if they were going to make a grant to every union w'hich sent a team on tour where would it end? “The principle is all wrong,” declared the chairman.
MATAMATA RUGBY
PLAYERS DISQUALIFIED (/'rot/. Our Own Correspondent) As instructed by the Waikato Rugby Union the Management Committee of the Matamata Sub-Union re-heard the case in which W. Moore, a Walton player, was disqualified for the season by the committee on May lo for striking an opposing player. Owing to the secretary of the Afatamata Sub-Union not complying with Rule 40, the Waikato Union authorised a rehearing. The referee, Mr. R. McCready, detailed the incidents leading up to Moor being ordered off the field and liis behaviour after the match and while on the side-line. Moore, on the other hand, flatly denied everything and when questioned could not recollect certain incidents. Witnesses were called to prove that Moore had used language after leaving the field. After a considerable discussion it was decided ‘ that, after having heard the evidence of the referee, the player and several witnesses, the union adhere to its previous decision.” Mr. P. J■ McNamara thought that Moore might have been harshly dealt with at the previous hearing, but at the same time he thought it was asking too much of the committee to expect them to swallow all the denials.
