Winter Carnival Opens at Hastings

DAY OF SURPRISES H.B. HUNT DETAILS (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Wednesday. For the ITawke’s Bay Hunt fixture, which is the first of the three days’ winter racing at Hastings, the weather was cold and a little showery. The track was heavy, and surprises were the order of the day, some of the dividends being very large. R. Reed, by winning on Kaiti, is now only one behind T. Green for the jockeys’ championship. Ellis also added ono to his score, and he is not far behind the other two. The sum of £8,507 was put through the totalisator, being £1,24.3 ahead of last year’s receipts. Balyfarnon Improves The scratchings of Saturn and Master Arch left six starters in the Hunters’ Hurdles. When the tapes were lifted Harrogate failed to get away and tailed the field all the way. Indian Chief, Red Bank and Ballyfarnon were the first to show out, and passing the stand the order was Red Bank, Indian Chief and Ballyfarnon, and Home Made a couple of lengths to the rear. Running along the back Red Bank and Home Made went past Indian Chief, with Ballyfarnon also making up ground fast. At the second hurdle from home, Home Made fell, leaving Red Bank and Ballyfarnon with a good lead from Indian Chief. Ballyfarnon was a little ahead of Red Bank at the last fence, and finishing on better, won by two lengths, Indian Chief being about 20 lengths further back. Mountain Echo was fourth, and Harrogate well back last. Two Good Prices The two outsiders erf the field in Patuki and Atereria collected the money in the Apley Hack Hurdles. When they were let go Good Sport, Our Jack and Tameterangi showed out, and passing the stands the order was Good Sport, Our Jack (who jumped badly at the fence in the straight) Tameterangi, Patuki Radiate, and Closefire being well back last and refusing to take the next hurdle. Running along the back Good Sport -and Our Jack were together in front of Tameterangi, Radiate and Patuki. Coming to the home bend Our Jack headed Good JSport. Then some lightning- changes took place, Patuki being rushed to the front and being just clear of Our Jack turning for home, who led Radiate, Good Sport, Tameterangi and Atereria. Patuki was well clear at the last fence from a bunched field. Then Atereria and Radiate put in their claims, but Patuki had too much in hand and Avon comfortably by a length, one and a-half lengths between second and third. Tametarangi was fourth. Locarno’s Big Surprise All started in the Hack Scurry, Locarno being a big outsider. They got away in good line, Trisogne, Argue, Locarno, Airforce, Le Champ and Cold Air being in that order as they came into the straight. Racing for the judge’s box, Locarno and Dreamy pulled away, passing the leaders a few yards from the post. Locarno prevailed by tlireequarters of a length, a length between second and third. Abisogne was fourth, close up. Rangi Sarto Unlucky The Hawke's Bay Hunt Cup was a great jumping race until near the finish, when Rangi Sarto, who had a big lead three furlongs from home, lost his rider, and at the last brush Master Arch came down. When they started on their long journev Banjuke and Rangi Sarto took u j the running from Holycomb, Merry Singer and Peep o' Day, and this was the order passing the stands, all the competitors giving a good exhibition of lepping. Running down the back the first time, Rangi Sarto and Banjuke were lengths clear of Merry Singer, who was out from the remainder. Passing the stands the second time Rangi Sarto and Banjuke were still lengths ahead, the next being Merry Singer, Bendower and Hollycomb, and so they raced along the back. Coming round the far bend Bendower went up third and Banjuke fell back. This left Rangi’ Sarto with a substantial lead, but he fell at the next brush. Hollycombe was now leading from Bendower, who fell at the brush in the straight, and Hollycombe then had no difficulty in going on to win by ten lengths, the same distance between second and third. Merry Singer was fourth and Banjuke fifth, Kaiti's Sprint In the Kawera Handicap Kaiti hopped away, quickest from Wanderlust and Mountain Heath. Rounding the far bend Kaiti had the lead from Epistle. Wanderlust, Mountain Heath Royal Time and Coot. Kaiti was the first to turn for home from Epistle and Wanderlust, Kaiti having no difficulty in winning by three lengths, a neck between second and third. Othon was fourth'. Another for Crack Amateur The Soutra Hunters’ Fiat was a good thing for Patuki, the favourite, Patuki began slowly, but was in front three furlongs from home, and was not troubled to win by a couple of lengths from Saturn, with Molong and Ualan next. The winner was ridden by Mr. J. Morris, who is almost invincible among the amateurs. Boy Wins Weil King Mart was confidently backed for the Horonui Hack Handicap, but was beaten after being given every chance to win. Brown Sugar led into the straight from King Mart, but once Boy challenged he asserted his superi-, onty and won by a length and a-half from The Mug (the new name for Tanekaha), who beat King Mart by two lengths. Next came Singleton, Lieut. Bill and Essential. Essential and Royal Eineage should improve on to-day’s running, and so should Singleton.
