SIR THOMAS ROYDF.N'S REVIEW.— At the annual meeting of the Cunard Steamship Company, Ltd., Sir Thomas Royden had a very pleasing state of affairs to put before the shareholders. The financial position of the company is satisfactory, but it would appear that the results of the year’s woi'king are much better than the figures given in the accounts would indicate. The fact that the company was able to borrow money at so favourable a rate as 4 % per cent, without collateral security can rightly be regarded, as he stated, as a legitimate source of pride, as also the fact that the shipbuilding bills have been reduced during the year from £2,900,000 to a little over £1,340,000, and at the date of the meeting to only £704,000, and that they will be entirely paid off by July 31 next. What, however, in one sense will interest shareholders more is the statement that the whole of the improvements to the Arjuitania, Mauretania, Berengaria, Caronia and Carmania have been paid for out of revenue, and that, notwithstanding ing this. th. directors have been able to add £ 100,00 mto reserve, and to increase the dividend to per cent.
