“BLOOD FROM STONES”

MUSEUM'S TASK DEVONPORT’S POSITION “It seems very simple to me—you can’t get blood out of a stone,” remarked Mr. C. Browne at Devonport Borough Council last evening, when the museum authorities asked for permission to wait on the council to urge it to contribute to the museum funds. It was mentioned that Devonport was in an anomalous position in that one-fifth of the borough was occupied by the Defence Department. No rates were paid on that land, and neither could the public use it. Moreover, the borough looked after Rangitoto Domain, which was very precious from a scientific standpoint. However, Messrs. Hislop, Browne and Ellisdon were deputed to attend a meeting of local bodies that is being convened by the museum authorities for July 2 to discuss the question ofa Museum Board, analagous to the Hospital Board. Mr. Hislop said Dunedin and Christchurch maintained their own museums, and Auckland should look after its own War Memorial.
