NEW REGENT
“THE FLIGHT COMMANDER” The two excellent pictures which make up the current programme at the New Regent Theatre will be shown again this evening. The first of these is a highly amusing story of a very modern young girl, which part is played by Miss Esther Ralston in the picture, “Love and Learn.” As Nancy Blake, Miss Ralston gets into all the hot water she can in an endeavour #3 make her parents forget their own troubles in anxiety concerning their daughter. To accomplish her purpose she performs some really hair-raising escapades, but her plan was the one, for eventually her parents forget their worries and Nancy finds her lover. The second picture, while of an entirely different type, is equally enjoyable. It tells of the very early days in California and the efforts of the residents to resist the intrusion of rampant gold-prospectors. The picture is entitled “The Gay Defender,” and the leading role is played by the well-known actor Richard Dix. A full supporting programme is also presented. Commencing to-marrow, there will be shown an entirely new programme headed by another British production. The success of such films as "The Flag Lieutenant” is paving the way for the British film, and the new picture, entitled “The Flight Commander,” should be sure of a warm reception in Auckland. “The Flight Commander” is a story of tlio newest branch of defence, the air. Sir Alan Cobliam, the worldrenowned and popular British aviator, is seen in this picture. The other players ar© Estelle Brody and John Stuart. “The Flight Commander” tells of a far outpost of the British Empire, where the local British merchant is entirely surrounded by a native uprising. fostered by Communists. Some fierce fighting takes place but the little group are saved by the arrival of a detachment of airplanes. Arthur G. Frost, conductor of the Regent operatic orchestra, also plays the Wuriitzer organ and is accorded a cordial reception in his dual role. The orchestra, under his baton, plays the beautiful overture, “Slavonic Rhapsody,” by Friedman.
