ELLERSLIE DOINGS
TRAINING IN RAIN PREPARING FOR TE KUITI Dismal climatic conditions greeted trainers at Ellerslie this morning, intermittent showers occurring during the greater part of training operations. Number three grass and the sand were ; the tracks in use, and the going was i not conducive to good times. Number Three Grass i King Emerald and Eager Rose were partnered over a round in 1.50 1-5, with ; the former doing it better at the end. King Emerald is to contest the big race 'at Ellerslie at the end of next week. At no stage of a six furlong gallop was Storm Fiend asked to extend himself, the time for the distance being 1.23. The Swift Flight gelding is in great fettle just now. A. Rhodes brought Glendowie across to Ellerslie this morning subsequently indulged the Great Northern Steeplechase winner in an essay with Rahepoto over a round in 1.49 3-s—a splendid gallop. Rahepoto was eased up toward th*e finish, allowing Glendowie to forge ahead: but nevertheless neither was doing its best, for the last half-mile took 58. There was very little separating Brampton and Mountain Guide at the conclusion of a round, the last six furlongs taking 1.29 2-5. These hacks are on the improve, and they may be worth keeping in mind for the Te Kuiti fixture at Ellerslie next week. The best half-mile during the morning’s work went down to the credit of Blilolo, who was undoubtedly going much better than Hoariri, who is, however, troubled with soreness. The pair cut out the distance in the surprisingly good time of 52 2-5. Muscari and the rising three-year-old. Myola (Catmint —Demoiselle) were partnered over half a mile in 55, finishing practically on terms. Master Doon easily accounted for Kamehameha over half-a-mile in 55 1-5, the initial furlong taking 13 3-5. They were cantered .round to the halfmile peg and again sprinted over the same ground. Abbot’s Delight and Killute were in company over six furlongs in 1.22 4-5, and both were going well at the finish. An aspirant In the chief event at Te Kuiti, Judge’s Box, covered six furlongs in 1.25 4-5, the first two furlongs taking 26 2-5. Winter weights may not suit this mare for she is rather on the small side. Kauri Park and Miss Alma were sent a round, moving over the last mile in 1.54 2-5, while Hannibal and Good Boy sped over four furlongs in 54 3-5. On the Sand Beau Cavalier jumped off at the seven-furlong post and covered the first three furlongs in 42 4-5, the complete distance taking 1.43 2-5. No rider has yet been engaged for the Chesterfield gelding at Ellerslie next week. Sir Russell and Sulla travelled over five furlongs in 1.9 3-5, the pair finishing up with nothing between them. Dave was asked to go a solid six furlongs in 1.23 1-5, the first two taking 28 1-5. The stable companions, Piet and Popmpieus, registered 1.25 for six furlongs, and got pver the first couple in 28 2-5. Star of the East was shaken up throughout a task over a round, the last mile taking 1.59. This gelding’s recent steeplechase form was most impressive, and as he has gone along nicely in his work since then, he will probably come in for a good deal of support in his engagements at Ellerslie next week. The Jumpers. Archeno (J. Sharkey) and Llewellyn (T. Chaplin) opened the ball with a lesson over four schooling hurdles. Nothing could be said against the display of Llewellyn, bLit there was room for improvement in Archeno’s exhibition, the daughter of the defunct Archiestown being inclined to rap the obstacles, and completely dislodged the third hurdle. A trio to give an interesting bout over four schooling hurdles were Odin (T. Chaplin), Billy Boy (S. Henderson) and Tamore (R. Olive). Odin and Billy Boy were responsible for an excellent' showing, but Tamore did not do so well. There was nothing wrong with the jumping of the last-named, but he rose high and this resulted in his making excellent recoveries at a couple of the hurdles. Potoanui (E. C. Rae) and Foxhound (J. Sharkey) were let off with an easy schooling task, the pair clearing in good style a couple of hurdles. Foxhound jumps a trifle high, but otherwise he has the ability to make a good hurdler. Both horses were then worked on the sand.
