AFTER-HOUR TRADE ALLEGED EVIDENCE OF FITNESS TENDERED The question of whether Daniel McCarthy is a fit person to hold the licence of the Victoria Hotel was discussed yesterday at an adjourned meeting of the Auckland Licensing Committee. Inspector J. Hollis represented the police. , ~ . . At the annual meeting held a fortnight ago, the police opposed McCarthy’s application for transfer of the licence from N. L. Higginson to himself. Evidence was then given by police sergeants as to the after-hour tiacle alleged to have taken place in the hotel during the time in which McCarthy was holding a temporary licence-To-day Mr. J. J. Sullivafl appeared for the applicant and asked permission to cross-examine the police witnesses. If that were not granted, he asked leave to call evidence as to McCarthy’s stability of character and of his fitness to hold a licence. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., chirman of the committee, said that the committee would, as an act of grace, hear MrSullivan’s evidence. In opening, Mr. Sullivan first protested against the police alluding in evidence to the case against McCarthy which had been dismissed. Evidence on McCarthy’s behalf was given by Air. Hugh Wright, merchant, Mr. Leonard Coakley. and Mr. Robert McVeagli, a barrister.
