Obituary

MRS. S. E. BACKHOUSE Mrs. Sarah Eliza Backhouse, widow of The late Mr. John Backhouse, died at Cambridge yesterday, aged SO years. She was one of the earliest pioneers in the Waikato. With her husband she left Auckland in 1864 by boat for the Waikato Heads, whence she travelled by drav to Hamilton, where Mr. Backhouse was engaged with the Commissariat Department. In the early days she spent some years on the Thames goldfields, and later lived near Cambridge till her death. She leaves five daughters and three sons.
