ROTORUA WINTER SHOW
REFLECTION OF PROGRESS LIST OF PRIZE-WINNERS (From Our Own Correspondent) ROTORUA, Wednesday. There was a good attendance at the opening of the Rotorua Winter Show. In his opening remarks the president, Mr. J. N. Keene, said: “We can boast that in regard, to the quailty of our root crops, butter-fat, fat lambs and fleeces, we are second to none in New Zealand. A few years ago there was practically no farming in the Rotorua County, but now we have 208,334 acres in occupation, 60,000 acres in grass and cultivation, of which 3,647 acre are in root and green crops, and this land carries 20,000 cattle, mostly dairy cows, 27,500 sheep, 2,531 pigs, and other small lines. “Our winter show has increased in entries each year since its inception, but we are handicapped this season with small entries in our root crops owing to the severe drought this summer; but the heads of the dairy industry have told us that the Rotorua district kept up a better average in cream during the dry times than any other part of the Waikato.” An exhibit by the Tourist Department from the kitchen garden, run in connection with the sanatorium, but which was not for competition, was very much admired, and attracted great attention. The entries of poultry produced some very fine*. birds, especially in the heavy breeds. The champion Black Orpington was much admired. There are about 150 entries in the poultry section. The home industries section also drew large entries, and these were of a high order. The instrumental, vocal and elocution contests have attracted many outside, as well as local, entries. ~ The district courts were very fine, and great artistry was shown in the displays.
