TOUR DE FRANCE RACE AUSTRALIANS’ BAD LUCK (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association.) Reed. 9.5 a.m. CHERBOURG, Tuesday. The field in the Tour de France cycle race has been reduced to 138. Through their advantage in pa.cking, the Frenchmen, Leducq, Frantz, Rebry, Vervaeckc, Dewale and Delannoy, won the stage prizes. The time was 4h. 12m. 295. Opperman’s time was 4h. 24m. 485., and that of Watson (New Zealand) and Osborne, 4h. 29m. 445. The distance was 90 miles. The Australian and Watson were mutually helping as much as possible, in the face of mishaps and disadvantages. A sporting sympathy was shown toward them everywhere. Opperman made a splendid finish. Tie made third fastest time in the final lap. The present aggregates are: Frantz, Meertens, Rebry, Dewaele, Vervaecke, lOh. 41m. 325. Opperman, in the 22nd position, llh. 3 4m. 575. The Australians are persistently losing time through their unfamiliarity with the signing controls, and the strange tyres.
