MIND YOUR SCREW
TN the course of the debate on the fetish of efficiency, which took place at the University last night, a speaker tried to picture the soul-destroying effect of mass-production methods. He described how the duties of one particular operative were confined to the turning of a single screw. Day after day he performed the task till its deadly monotony broke his nerve. Finallyr when he became unable to keep pace with the machine, the foreman discharged him and he was compelled to join the ranks of the unemployed. “And then he wouldn’t have any screw!” interjected a bright student at the back of the hall—much to the amusement of the audience.
