BIRTHDAY PARTY

The Ladies’ Guild of St. John’s Anglican Church in Te Puke were the hostesses at a “birthday party” at the opening of the new Parish Hall on Monday night. A very novel idea was innovated by the Ladies’ Guild. Parishoners received an invitation enclosed with a tiny si’k sac, the sac being “for pennies as many years as you are old.” Airs. F. H. Wilkie, secretary of the guild, collected the sacs, the contents of which went to the parish fund. There was a very large attendance of parishoners, in spite of bad weather. The Rev. Air. Klingender called on the Bishop of Waiapu to open the hall. In declaring the hall open the bishop congratulated the members of the Ladies’ Guild on the tine work they had done during the year to assist the funds. He touched briefly on the “duplex system,” and told how effectively it had worked elsewhere. He hoped that the hall would enable new friendships to be made and that the hall would be used every night. During the evening musical items were given between the dances. Those contributing were: Air. and Mrs. F. H. Wilkie. Aliss Watson, Air. Simpson, Airs. L. Booker, Mr. Simpson, Mrs. Washer, Miss Watson. Two humorous monologues entitled “My Old Bassoon” and “How the Curate Proposed to Sophia,” were given by Air. F. H. Wilkie Miss Plaice acted as accompaniste. Dance music was played by Alesdames Lowe, McEwan. Alisses W. Harris and Plaice. After supper a large three-tier birthday cake was placed on the stage. The cake was made by Alesdames Rogers. Lemon and Bayly, and very beautifully iced by Mrs. E. H. Wilkins. The Bishop cut the cake and each guest received a piece. Among those dancing were: Mrs. Booker, apricot crepe de chine with lace hem. Airs Granger, black lace frock. Mrs. Alexander, black georgette with coloured flowers. Mrs Brown, black lace trimmed with vieux rose satin. Airs. Wilkie, pale mauve georgette.
