EDENDALE

NEW PROGRAMME TO-NIGHT “Bitter Apples,” starring Monte Blue, which will be shown to-night at the Edendale Theatre, is founded upon a story by Harold McGrath, which has for its centre the hatred of two Sicilian youths, Stefani and Maria, for the son of the man who caused the death of their aged father. The picture might have been aptly named “Vendetta,” for the avengers believe that it is their sacred duty to offer up blood for blood, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. In their unreasoning fury they forget that the young man who is their victim was in no way responsible for the crash of his father's bank, which was followed by the suicide of their father. Stefani tries first the hurling of knives in which he is adept. The sister, Maria, is more cunning. “Give me time,” she says. “I shall kill him as surely as you, but by inches.” Following young Wyncote when he starts an around- the-world voyage, are the two—Stefani as the steward, Maria as a passenger. The latter at once begins working her sinister scheme. Lupe Velez, the young Mexican girl who plays opposite Douglas Fairbanks in “The Gaucho,” shortly to be released in Auckland, pronounces her name Lupay. yaleth* *
