UNLUCKY IN LAST START GOOD PACERS IN AUSSIE The news that a trotter was aboard the Marama, which arrived from Sydney yesterday, led to . the impression that the Australian crack pacer. Lord Lulu, who was under offer to an Auckland sportsman, was about to arrive. When the steamer was berthed, the pacer turned out to be the Aucklander, Metal, owned by Mr. J. S. Johnson, who has been racing on the other side of the Tasman. Metal, who looks none the worse for his trip/ sported silk on three occasions, winning the first time out at Ep-

ping, when he created a favourable impression on Australian experts. He was unsuccessful in his next start, the heavy going hampering the Don Pronto horse. Last week Metal started in a mile and a-quarter from 48yds behind, and Avhen overhauling his field easily in the race, suffered considerable interference through another horse breaking and colliding with him. As a result the Aucklander suffered an injury to his leg, besides losing the race. Owner Johnson, in an interview w\‘h “Abaydos” this morning, said there are some high-class horses at present in Australia, but in his opinion Lord Lulu was the champion. He remarked he would not be surprised to see the Aussie pacer make a trip to New Zealand.
