CITY FINANCES

According to figures obtained by THE SUN from tne Town Clerk this morning, the city in the i 92728 financial year was valued at £2,263,425, and for the same area this year the valuation is £2,337,397. The rate in 1927-28 was 3s 11d, and on the figures given this works out at £443,254. The City Council figures, however, made this £432,831, estimated to produce £416,831. For this year the rate is 3s which on the new valuation works out at £472,505. On the face cf it, the increased valuations, amounting to £123,972, and the halfpenny rate increase together, should produce an increase of £29,251 in the city rates this year, without making any allowances. The difference between the possible city rates and the amount estimated to be received £509,019, (less arrears, £24,075), will be made up by Avondale, Tamaki, and Orakei, who will be rated for 14 months instead of for a year. Their respective valuations are £83,436, £89,146, and £7,908.
