COOKS’ PARTHIAN THRUST
TRY TO CIRCUMVENT OWNERS’ RIGHT SELECTION OF LABOUR i (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.25 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. A crew for the Ulimaroa will be engaged to-morrow. The vessel is in dock, and will sail for Wellington on Friday. The Cooks’ Union is trying to circumvent the owners’ right to select labour at the ship’s side, and has decided to impose a fine of £3 3s, with 12 months' expulsion, if any member accepts employment outside the union rooms. The marine cooks continue to return to work and the shipowners are busy refitting their idle ships. It is anticipated that within a fortnight all the vessels affected by the recent strike will again be in commission and that the normal services will be resumed. At a meeting in Melbourne the owners decided to pay off the volunteer crews and to compensate tlK?.m with one month's wages in addition to payment for the services given.
