FARMERS AND RATE RELIEF

A LABOUR AMENDMENT (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A.—United Service) Reed. 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Monday. In the House of Commons, Mr. Ben Riley (Labour), during the committee stage of the Rate Apportionment Bill debate, moved an amendment to admit agricultural hereditaments from relief. Agriculturists, he said, were already relieved of three-quarters of their rates. Further relief meant a total contribution of £19,000,000 yearly from the public purse. The Bill did not ensure that the actual or even the cultivating farmer would receive relief. The closure was applied to the debate. The amendment was defeated by 226 votes to 124.
