DESERVED WIN
ALL BLACKS IMPROVE AFRICAN PRESS OPINIONS TEAM FOR WEDNESDAY (United P.A.—By Telegraph—CopyrightJ (Special to Press Association.J Reed. 8.50 a.m. JOHANNESBURG, Monday. Inquiries made to-day showed that the injuries to the members of the Transvaal team in the match against the Ail Blacks on Saturday were more serious that they first were thought to be. Raath, the centre threequarter, was injured in the first few minutes of the game. He received a broken collarbone and a broken nose. Botha, one of the forwards, is suffering from severe contusions on the side, and hemhorrhage, as well as a badly split lip. Kotze recovered to-day from bad concussion. Most of the papers throughout the Union are emphatic that New Zealand deserved its win. The Johannesburg “Star” said: “Perhaps a draw would have been a fairer reflection of the run of the game. Against this, it must be made perfectly clear that with only half the opportunities which came the way of the Transvaal backs, the All Black back division always seemed more dangerous when in possession of the ball, though it rarely looked like scoring. There was always a thrust in its movements, which conveyed that they were the more finished players. The tourists confirmed the impression that they gave at Kroonstad, that the whole side is improving. The forwards on Saturday were a far more impressive pack than against the Transvaal in the first match.” Several papers publish columns of letters about the Nefv Zealanders, one maintaining a controversy on “this brutal game of Rugby.” THE ROVER AGAIN There is considerable argument in the newspapers about Scrimshaw, the rover.
It is maintained that Scrimshaw is off-side more often than he is seen by the referee. The biggest contention is that Scrimshaw does not get behind the ball after New Zealand has hooked. The South African antipathy toward the wingforward is the same as in England in
1924. The team to play Western Transvaal on Wednesday is: Lilburne Rushbrook Sheen Lucas Strang Nicholls Kilby Stewart Hadley Hore M. Brownlie Alley Finlayson Snow C. Brownlie Emergencies: Robilliard, Ward. The rest of the team will stay at Johannesburg till Thursday, when the whole side leaves for Maritzburg.
