IN SOUND POSITION
SIR J. WARD’S OPINION OF NEW ZEALAND INTERVIEW IN LONDON "The Dominion is now in a very sound position financially,” stated Sir Joseph Ward to a reporter on his arrival last month in London. He hoped to return within a month of the open'd* of the session on June 28. There was some trouble in some districts about the high price of land, but prices were gradually readjusting themselves, he continued. The Dominion was prosperous in the main, but it was not desirable to send out immigrants during the winter months. When immigration was resumed, it would almost certainly be confined to the summer months. New Zealand wanted more people but they must be absorbed slowly. Sir Joseph expressed the view that the political situation was very mixed. The question of the licensing laws would undoubtedly be a main issue at the next election, and it was impossible to tell how the people would vote. He retains as strongly as ever the view that the present system of Imperial Conferences Is unsatisfactory and that in the future some form of Empire Parliament, sitting in the different parts of the Empire, must be devised.
