MANAGER TENDERED FAREWELL FUNCTION AT WARKWORTH Friends of Mr. C. Landman, assistant factory manager at the Port Albert Dairy Company's Kokako butter factory, tendered him a farewell at an informal function on Saturday evening. Mr. G. Price, on behalf of the residents of Wellsford, eulogised Mr. Landman’s work, and spoke of the esteem in which he was held. He wished him success in his new post as first assistant in the Palmerston North dairy factory. Mr. Landman suitably responded. WHANGAREI BOROUGH WOMAN COUNCILLOR SWORN IN Mrs. Frances Foote, the first woman member of the Whangarei Borough Council, was sworn in at a meeting of the council last evening. The inspector reported that the revenue from various licences issued in May was £773 5s Sd. The revenue from stock slaughtered at the abattoirs was £l4O 18s 2d. It was agreed that plans be made for an extension of the library, the cost not to exceed £1,500. The consulting engineers forwarded plans and specifications of the proposed sewerage reticulation to cost £19,368. Mr. A. H. Curtis was appointed chairman of the Electrical Committee in place of Mr. A. D. Jack. HAMILTON NEWS MINOR OUTBREAK OF FIRE The Hamilton Fire Brigade received a call on Sunday to an outbreak of fire in a house in Massey Street, owned by Mr. B. Smythe and occupied by Air. C. Newbury. The fire was caused by a spark from the open fireplace. The outbreak was quickly controlled. Damage to the extent of £4O was caused. The building was insured for £7OO in the State Fire Office. r * * Stranded motorists will have less cause for complaint than formerly now that an efficient patrol officer of the Auckland Automobile Association is keeping a sharp look-out on the main highways between' Paeroa and Rotorua. Te Kuiti and Huntly. Attired in the smart uniform with A.A.A. blue facings and possesisng a motor-cycle containing a first-aid outfit, as well as supplies of benzine- and accessories, he started on his duties to-day. One of his main objects will be to increase the membership of the Hamilton branch. Although there has been a slight increase in the past few weeks, the numerical roll is far below what it should be considering the population not only of Hamilton, but of the surrounding districts. The patrol system will be extended when the membership justifies it. TAURANGA AFFAIRS The municipal band has placed an order with Alessrs. E. A. Eady and Co. for 18 silver-plated instruments, to be delivered in two months. The band has a large membership. * * * Great concern is felt over the dismissal of 250 Public Works’ employees, caused by the Railways Department having taken over a section of the East Coast railway from the Public Works Department. The men are to hold a mass meeting this evening, when strong representations will be made to the Government to start with the extension of the railway from Taneatua to Opotiki. The position is aggravated by the fact that many have been occupying departmental houses, which they have to give up, and there are no empty houses in the town. * * « The Electric Power Board held its monthly meeting on Friday. Katikati residents inquired as to street lights for the township, and the board decided that the tariff be as near cost price as possible. * * * The Tauranga Bowling Club held its annual meeting on Friday. Mr. G. Henderson presided over a large attendance. Air. Henderson presented a very favourable report as to membership and finances. The following officers were elected: President, Air. D. E. Ivory; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Cronin and L. Crowley; secretary, Mr. C. Whiting; executive committee, Alessrs. H. Sharp, S. Pemberton, H. Wollomans. T. Phillips, and Cameron. WARNING TO MARINERS. The superintendent of Alercantile Marine has received a radio message from the master of the Union Company’s Kaituna, advising that the Busby Point light, near Whangarei, is not working. As soon as possible the light will be adjusted. The Ai-apaaw is to be dispatched from Onehunga early this afternoon for Wanganui and Westport. The Rarawa is due at Onehunga early to-morrow morning from New Plymouth. She sails at 3 p.m. on Thursday for the same port. The Isabella de Fraine is scheduled to 3ail at three o’clock to-morrow afternoon for Hokianga. EsSa MANUREWA TOWN BOARD The attention of the Manurewa Town Board was drawn last evening to dangerous state of the junction of Ifc*. sell and Weymouth Roads. Mr. C. H Lupton was authorised to interview the owner of the property, with £ view to having the corner cut back. ROTORUA SUNSHINE LEAGUE TRAVELLERS PROVIDE CONCERT Afembers of the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ Club, assisted by ladies, gave a grand concert on behalf of the Sunshine League’s funds at Rotorua on Saturday evening. The hall was crowded. The programme was an excellent one and consisted of elocutionary and musical items. During the interval Mr. W. HiJ!, president of the Sunshine League, thanked the artists for their services and for their financial assistance and stated that the generosity of the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ Club wis proverbial. Mr. Prentice, president of the AC.T. Club, thanked Air. Hill for his remarks. Mr. Watt said they wished to thank Alessrs. Geaney and Clark, the RAM. Co., Air. Abel Rowe and Mr. and Mrs. Shaw for valuable assistance. A sheep was auctioned and re-auc-tioned until it had realised £77 Ilf. and the total amount to be handed to the Sunshine Lesigue will be about £IOO. The A. and P. Association’s annua! winter show which opens at Rotorua to-morrow, and condnues until Friday, promises to eclipse all previous shows held here. Record entries have also been received for the musical and elocutionary competitions. The Rotorua Band and Orchestra wil! be in attendance during the day and evening. KING COUNTRY NEWS Air. R. W. Smith, M.P. for W'aimarino, patron of the Ongarue Sport-' Club, was present at the annual meeting.
