AUCKLAND-WELLINGTON
DIRECT ROUTE BEING DEVELOPED INTEREST TO MOTORISTS (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, To-day. Motorists should take great interest in the direct Auckland to Wellington route which the Public Works Department is developing. Already about £40,000 has been spent upon the Wanganui-Raetihi section. All the work, with the exception of a few miles, has been completed, and arrangements for metalling have been made. The Raetihi to Raurimu section is nearly ready and from Raurimu to Taumarunui the road is being done by the local bodies. An entirely new road is being mad' l from the Ongarue Valley to the Piopio Valley. This will be called the Hiwi Road” Joining up with the coastal route at Piopio, this will complete the most direct route from Wanganui to To Kuiti. When this is completed the shortest route will be via Wanganui, Horopito. Taumarunui and Te Kuiti. From Bulls, via Stratford, to Te Kuiti the route is 227* miles, whereas the route from Bulls, via Wanganui, Horopita. and Taumarunui, to Te Kuiti will be only 185* miles, a saving of 42 miles.
