BOWLING REVIEW
BUSY AUCKLAND SEASON CENTRE ISSUES ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Auckland Centre of the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association, to be presented at the annual meeting on June 26, states the season closed with a total of 44 affiliated clubs, representing an aggregate membership of 2,824. When it was remembered that the North Auckland Centre came into existence at the beginning of the season, thereby causing the withdrawal of nine clubs from the Auckland Centre, it was considered that the above figures were eminently satisfactory, as they represented an actual increase in membership of 120 for the same number of . clubs over the previous season. The | past season had been an exceptionally busy one. In addition to the usual centre competitions, visits were received from parties from Tauranga, South Auckland, Taranaki, South Australia and Victoria, while visits were made to Helensville and South Auckland. A new competition for the champion rinks of clubs was also inaugurated, and a further innovation was an afternoon devoted to a friendly game among delegates. CARLTON’S GREAT YEAR Twenty-nine clubs entered for the inter-club pennant competition, and they were divided into two sections, no fewer than 252 teams, or 1,008 players, taking part each Saturday. Congratulations weer due to the Carlton Club for the splendid performance put up by its members during the season in centre competitions. Not only was it successful in winning the inter-club pennant competition with a quota of 20 teams, but it was also victorious in the Christmas tournament and executive fours competition, both of which events it has now won for three years in succession, as -well as carrying off the champion of champions’ competition for the past season. The first competition for the Hardley Shield between representatives of the Auckland and South Auckland Centres was played, the former winning, and thus becoming the first holders of the trophy. The executive desired to place on record its sincerest thanks to the various clubs for the use of their greens for all centre functions, and to all of those who rendered assistance in the entertainment of visitors during the exceptionally heavy season just ended. Thanks were also due to the ladies, who so generously assisted in the dispensing of afternoon tea, to the umpires who officiated at the various tournaments, to the greenkeepers for the manner in which they prepared the greens for play, and to the Press for their full reports of all competitions. The balance sheet discloses a balance of assets over liabilities of £194 10s Sd.
