HOUSE DESTROYED

NO BRIGADE IN DISTRICT FIRE AT MT. WELLINGTON A large five-roomed wooden house, owned and occupied by Mr. L. E. Thomas, in Hamlin’s Road, off the Mt. Wellington highway, was totally destroyed by fire at 10 o’clock on Saturday night. Smoke was noticed issuing from the house by a passer-by, who aroused Mr. Thomas, who was alone in the house. It was found that the breakfastroom was well alight, and owing to the density of the smoke, nothing could be saved. There is no water supply or firefighting equipment in the district, and the large crowd of onlookers could only stand by and watch the building burn. The house was insured in the Eagle Star Insurance Company for £BOO, and the furniture in the State Fire Insurance Company for £2OO.
