STEWARD’S ESCAPE
FELL BETWEEN MAHENO AND WHARF DANGEROUS PRACTICE Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Stewards on ferry steamers are in the habit of jumping ashore before the vessel is tied up, in order to obtain seats for passengers on the ferry train. Yesterday morning one of the Maheno’s stewards jumped ashore, slipped and fell on his back. He was followed by another steward, who also slipped, and fell over the side of the wharf. In falling lie managed to cling to a girder, and was hanging at full arm’s length when bystanders hauled him up on to the wharf. He had a remarkable escape from being crushed against the wharf, for immediately upon his being hauled up the Maheno again swung in, her side grazing the wharf.
