CHARITY OF CHRIST

ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL

The third of a series of sermons on the “Charity of Christ,” was delivered by the Rev. Father Eccleton last evening.

Following on the institution of the Blessed Eucharist as sacrament and as sacrifice as two evidences of Christ’s supreme charity, the preacher dealt with a third evidence of the charity of the incarnate God. In the Church which He founded, and which is guided by the Holy Spirit as an infallible authority in the world, speaking with His voice and teaching exactly what He taught, and as He taught it, a third external and patent expression of the abiding love of Christ for mankind was pointed out. This authority is the same as that of the Founder of Christianity Himself. To call this authority despotism is to invite anarchy and chaos into religion, and anarchy and chaos, greatly more l'ar-reaching and of vastly graver import in relation to civil authorty.
