THE SOCIAL JESUS

CONTACT WITH MILLIONS

The personality of Jesus and his contact with the millions was the theme of the Rev. Leonard B. Dalby’s discourse at Pitt Street Methodist Church yesterday. Preaching on “The Social Jesus,” Mr. Dalby spoke of the flight of the people in this extraordinary age. He pointed out that Jesus seemed to be more impressive a Personality than ever. He suited the people who were not satisfied with a Book “without fault” in it, who could not accept even an “infallible” Church, or the excited offers of weird pedlars in religions. Jesus knew in His simple life something of governments, human institutions, organisations, religious coteries, and men in the street. He saw Nature, the sea, the sky, all of it. He saw “birds of the air” and “beasts of the field.” He watched them all. The multitude of the people moved Him to compassion. Individuals of all kinds He came in contact with. Millions of men have followed him. Millions have been made by Him. He is still the Friend to the end. An American puts it: “If Jesus Christ is a God, And the only God, I swear I will follow Him through Heaven and Hell, The earth, the sea, and the air.”
