PINEAPPLE INDUSTRY
FIJI AND NEW ZEALAND HAWAIIAN'S NOW INTERESTED There is every prospect that Fiji will be exporting pineapples in considerable numbers to New Zealand one of these days, according to Commander Hewitt, who returned to Auckland to-day by the Niagara. Commander Hewitt, who is interested in a pineapple plantation in Fiji, recently visited Hawaii and discussed the position with growers there. He also interested Mr. J. Hole, the "pineapple king” in the possibility of growing pines in Fiji for export to Xew Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom. Australia is one of the few British countries where there is a protectionist tariff against their importation. The Australians, naturally, want to protect their own Queensland industry. "I am convinced that a considerable step forward will result as far as the export of pines to New Zealand is concerned.” says Commander Hewitt. ‘‘The outlook is particularly hopeful.”
