Talking Their Way Round The World
AMERICAN DEBATERS UNIVERSITY TRIO ARRIVE John F. Davis, Charles H. Guptill and Mervin Lloyd Aimes, are three young American University men who have literally talked themselves into a tour of the world* AII three a.re talented speakers, who have made a name for Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, against other American colleges, and they now represent their alma mater in a debating tour of the world. Tho young Americans arrived in Auckland to-day by the Niagara from Honolulu, where they debated with the University of Hawaii. After speaking in tho principal centres of the Dominion, commencing at Auckland this evening, they will leave for Sydney and compete with the Australian University speakers. Mr. Davis is a student for the law. Ho hopes to enter Harvard later. Mr. Aimes is the “confirmed pedagogue” of the party. He has already taught in different high schools, and will return to the teaching profession. And as for Mr. Guptill, as Mr. Davis smilingly confessed on board the liner to-day, he has a liking for journalism, and there is every prospect of his “degenerating into a newspaper-man!” The trio was entertained in New York on May 11 at a farewell luncheon given in their honour by members of the English-speaking Union. Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco treated them in a similar manner. The American visitors are keenly looking forward to the New Zealand and Australian portion of their tour. They will return to the United States via Europe, after speaking at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. This afternoon they will tour the city by car.
