YOUTH’S SERIOUS OFFENCE
THREE YEARS IN BORSTAL (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Friday. Although circumstances in mitigation of the offence were cited by his counsel, Richard David Jeffrey was sentenced by Mr. Justice Blair to three years in a Borstal Institute in the Supreme Court to-day, for rape. Mr. G. G. Bell, for the defence, saicl prisoner had pleaded guilty to the offence at Matamata. The girl was aged 19, and not likely to suffer any serious consequences as a result of the assault. Prisoner was only 17 h, and had not had proper parental control, as his father died some years ago. “The case is not so bad as many others, and I do not want to punish you unduly,” said his Honour in sentencing prisoner.
