ADVANTAGES OF EARLY DIGGING
Digging, taken in moderation, is the healthiest form of exercise. There are many advantages to be derived from digging during the next few weeks, instead of leaving the soil unturned until spring. Frost acts upon the particles of clay, reducing it to a powder. For some reason, early digging helps to keep the soil moist during the following season. One authority estimates that from two to three per cent, more water is retained in dry weather by dug land above that turned over in spring. Except during very cold spells, nitrates are formed and other chemicals released and made available as plant food during the winter months, but this can only' take place in a soil which is aerated.
