FOOT AND MOUTH DISCOVERY
TENACITY OF VIRUS An important statement was made in the House of Lords by tlie Earl of Stradbroke as to the persistence of the virus of foot-and-mouth disease in the bones of affected animals. He said that there was no absolute proof that the disease was brought in by chilled meat or frozen meat, but Lord Bledisloe had made arrangements with the Argentine Government that would diminish the danger from chilled meat. While there was no proof of disease being brought in chilled or frozen meat, “the Research Committee has" made the very disquieting discovery that the virus of the disease can be found in the marrow and bones of animals 76 days after the animals have been slaughtered.” The Ministry had issued an order prohibiting the feeding of animals with animal matter until it had been boiled. Scientists, he added, nad not yet found a preventative of the disease, but they were working hard on the problem.
