(BY COTHURNUS)

Picture May Beatty as a negro “mammy.” This is the character part which she will play when the company with vTiieh she is appearing in “The Girl Friend” at the Theatre Royal, Melbourne, changes to another musical comedy, called “Hit the Deck.” Miss Beatty will be Magnolia —typical name for a “coloured gal”—and she will sing tlie most striking song in the piece. This is “Hallelujah,” which was composed by Mr. Vincent Youmans, and is constructed upon a medley of old negro spirituals. The part of Magnolia provides greater opportunities for the versatility of Miss Beatty than that of Mrs. Denniston in “The Girl Friend.”
