HOUSE DESTROYED

FIRE AT MILFORD BRIGADE HANDICAPPED Fire completely destroyed an unoccupied two-storeyed house in Cecil Road, Milford, shortly before midnight. There was no water plug near enough for an effective lead of hose to be played on the flames. A house only 20 feet away escaped with minor damage. The blaze was first seen a few' minutes after 11 p.m., by Mr. C. Chester, who lives close by. When the Takapuna brigade arrived the flames had a stroqg hold and, fanned by the strong wind blowing, swept through the house in a short time. Sparks fell in adjoining sections. Efforts were concentrated on saving a building containing four flats, and owned by Mr.' Allen, which was directly down-wind from the blazing house. Fortunately it was built of roughcast material, and one corner only was charred. A two-inch water main carries the supply in Cecil Road, the nearest plug being in Kitchener Road. The supply of hose carried proved insufficient, and the fire engine returned to the station for a further 600 feet. A total of 1,900 feet was run out, but even this failed to reach the fire. A small lead, pumped by the engine, was played on ; the block of flats. This is the fourth unoccupied house that has been burnt in Takapuna during the last two months.
