AMUSING THINGS.—The news columns things these days, says the “Nautical things these days, says the “National Gazette,” that it keeps the regular humorists on the continual stretch to work , up hi lighter half as hearty as that pro- ! vided By the serious people who do our comic things. Take the case of the schooner K. V. Kruse, which arrived at Astoria after a IIS-days passage from j Adelaide. As the schooner neared Ame- ; rica she was driven far offshore by a I heavy gale. A man was lost, and for three weeks the crew subsisted on 'meagre | rations, the last week on eight pounds of rice intended originally for the skipper’s parrot. Off Coos Bay they hailed a passing tanker and signalled “We are short of food.” The tanker, commanded no doubt by one of the newer humorists, replied. ‘That is very appetising.” “We are unable to cross Coos Bay,” a second signal was jnade by the schooner. “That’s ; too bad,” the tanker replied. As the Kruse made port, unaided, the joke is on 1 the funny tanker, a craft that probably ! never heard of the word salvage, or of | the old spirit of helpfulness at sea. So the newer order amuses itself and carries on, and the world wonders TOjiat will hai>pen next.
