ACCESS TO CITY
2,000 WANT NEW ROAD PONSONBY’S PETITION HARBOUR STREET EXTENSION Two thousand residents of Ponsonby are interested in a petition which was presented to the City Council last evening, ahd seeks the formation of a road from Harbour Street to Fanshawe Street, thus improving the access to a populous portion of the city. rpuE weighty document was tendered by Councillor J. A. C. Allum. That the work involved would cost £II,OOO was the pronouncement of Councillor S. I. Crookes, chairman of the Town-Planning Committee. In another part of the order paper appeared a report on the subject from the City Engineer, as well as a report from him that the Gas Works engineer had written strongly opposing the suggestion. The Gas Company was in opposition because the new road would take land which was very valuable to it in the congested state of its works. The Town Planning Committee, headed by Councillor S. I. Crookes, had visited the site, and had decided that the time was inopportune to proceed with the work. Councillor Allum moved that the recommendation be sent back to the committee for further consideration, and this was agreed to. WHEN THE NIGHT IS YOUNG “fTHE night is young. It is only nine o’clock. Why, some theatre performances are not even started yet.”—-Cr. A. J. Stallworthy, protesting at the City Council’s meeting last evening against postponement of the debate on the estimates-. There was laughter from, the gallery, which drew a curt “Silence!” from the Mayor.^ It was decided that the debate be renewed next Tuesday.
