COASTAL SURVEY

PROHIBITIVE COST LIGHT AT NORTH CAPE A new marine survey of the New Zealand coast would cost at least £ 50,000 a year for 20 years, and therefore, there was no prospect at the moment of the work being undertaken, said Mr. G. C. Godfrey, Secretary of Marine, to-day. A new unattended light at that important turning point, North Cape, is to b© put into working order as soon as possible, said Mr. Godfrey. For 12 months the radio beacon has been working at Cape Maria Van Diemen lighthouse, under two skilled operators. From steamers able to work with the radio beacon satisfactory reports had been received, but unfortunately, very few ships were equipped with the complete apparatus and therefore little use was made of the beacon.
