STAFF APPOINTMENTS Mr. G. Whitelaw, assistant-manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been promoted to inspector. The vacant position will be filled by Mr. H. R. Chalmers, manager of the Palmerston North branch. Mr. W. G. Miller, assistant-manager at Christchurch, has been transferred to Palmerston North as manager. BRITAIN EXPORTS LESS (United P A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) LONDON, Wednesday. The British trade returns for May show that imports increased in value by £3.023,000, exports decreased by £4,721,000 and re-exports decreased by £529,000, compared with May last year. The principal increases in imports were:—-Raw cotton, £2,189,000; raw wool, £2,506,000. The principal decreases in imports were:—Rubber, £1,570,000. Decreases in exports were: Coal, £907,000; iron and steel and manufactures thereof, £1,220,000; cotton yarns and manufactures therof. £2.523,000. ledge of the exceedingly satisfactory trade balance disclosed by the recent Governmental figures for the year ended March last, may 1 assert that he must be a pessimist indeed who feels it necessary to take a gloomy view of the present position of tFm country?” Th© report was adopted.
