EXPRESS SMASHES INTO BENZINE LORRY

TWO MEN INJURED Press Association. PALMERSTON N., Thursday. The south-bound express from New Plymouth this afternoon crashed into a lorry, which was heavily laden with cases of benzine, at the West Street railway crossing, where a number of accidents have already occurred. The lorry was badly damaged and caught fire, but the two occupants, Mr. Ken Kersal, of Palmerston North, and Mr. Frederick Lester, of Auckland, miraculously escaped from the wreckage. They were taken to hospital. Both men are suffering severely from shock, and Mr. Kersal was badly burned. Later hospital reports say that both patients are improving. The train was delayed for over an hour until the fire brigade smothered the flames and the* line was made safe for traffic. The lorry, which is the property of Mr. Kersal, was burned, and only a few cases of the benzine were saved
