WOMEN’S FRANCHISE BILL

DEBATE IN THE LORDS COMMITTEE STAGE PASSED (United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A. — United Service) LONDON, Wednesday. The Equal Franchise Bill, giving the vote to women at the age of 21, was debated in the committee stage to-day in the House of Lords. Lord Newton moved an amendment to clause 1 to fix the age of new voters of both sexes at 25 instead of 21. He said he feared the day when the Labour Party might say, “Let us take the vote from all the people above the age of 50 and bestow it on bright young persons of 14 or 15, who have been properly schooled in Communistic principles.” His amendment, if carried, would keep the number of voters within manageable limits. Viscount Cecil opposed the; amendment. He said it would destrov the Bill. Lord Gainford said there -was no demand for the Bill. The matter should be left to the existing electorate at the general election. The Lord Chancellor, Lord Hailsham. urged the House not to kill the measure by passing the amendment. The latter was negatived by 87 votes to 41. and the committee stage was concluded.
